South Korea to launch new space agency
South Korea to pass special bills to establish Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA) in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province. KASA will merge the two current space institutes, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute to optimise efficiency in R&D.
Paul Yun, a Korean American solar system ambassador for NASA remarked,"…space has become an area where economic and diplomatic factors take up bigger parts of the whole industry, and researchers for Korea's whole space sector. Furthermore, it must be capable of managing and advancing diplomatic matters, potentially pertaining to the nation's defence.”
Officials from space companies discussed their aspirations for KASA and emphasised the value of international collaboration as well as the necessity of reviving the sector.
