Let's Talk Coffee: Starbucks in Korea and Australia

Australia and Korea have vastly different cafe cultures. In Korea, cafes play a central role not only in coffee but also in culture, serving as a hub for social gatherings, work, study and relaxation. While in Australia, cafes are a place to drink coffee rather than a place to spend hours at. Many Australians visit their smaller, local boutique stores in their neighbourhood where they find a sense of community.Β

Bigger franchise cafes often offer more expensive coffees than local cafes, primarily due to their attractive interior designs. For Koreans who view cafes as places to spend time, this pricing seems reasonable. However, Australians, who prefer building rapport with their local baristas and frequently enjoy coffee, find franchise coffee prices unnecessarily high. This contrast is evident as, by the end of 2023, Korea had 1,893 Starbucks outlets, ranking as the fourth-largest Starbucks market globally. In contrast, Australia and Italy, both renowned for their coffee history, only had 71 and 36 Starbucks outlets, respectively.
