Hanwha partners with ITM to prolong life of submarines

Hanwha Aerospace Co. and ITM Semiconductor Co. have joined forces to create batteries for submarine exports. With less time to recharge and higher energy density, the new lithium-ion batteries will allow submarines to stay underwater for longer.

As part of a government-backed effort, Hanwha was chosen to build a lithium-ion battery to replace the current lead-acid battery system for submarines. Hanwha has selected ITM to create the undersea battery trays.

ITM designs battery management systems (BMS) that eliminate battery explosion risks by controlling voltage and currents. With ITM’s technology, the safety of lithium-ion batteries in submarines and automobiles are guaranteed.
