Foreign Minister Penny Wong visits Seoul with energy security on the agenda
📢 Foreign Minister Penny Wong visits Seoul with energy security on the agenda 📢
Foreign Minister Penny Wong will visit the Republic of Korea, Japan and China this week to discuss energy security and disruptions in the global energy market linked with the Middle East crisis.
On Thursday, she will meet her counterpart, H.E. Cho Hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Seoul, reinforcing the strong partnership between Australia and Korea. As Comprehensive Strategic Partners, Australia and Korea share aligned strategic interests, complementary economies, and deep, generational people‑to‑people ties.
💡 Why it matters:
🔹 Australia remains highly reliant on imported refined fuels, including from South Korea.
🔹 Korean companies are significant investors across Australia’s oil and gas sector, including organisations such as POSCO, KOGAS and Prism Energy International, which are also AKBC members.
🔹 This visit underscores the deeply interdependent energy relationship between Australia and Korea, with Korea serving as a critical supplier of refined fuels to Australia, while Australia provides reliable upstream energy resources, highlighting the mutual importance of maintaining stable and secure supply chains during periods of global market disruption.
