AKBC Appoints New Chairman

Mr. Ferguson has had a distinguished career in Australian politics and public service, including serving as the Member for Batman in the Australian Parliament. He served as Minister for Resources and Energy and Minister for Tourism in the Rudd and Gillard Governments from 2007 to 2013. Prior to entering Parliament, Mr. Ferguson had a distinguished  career as a Trade Unionist including roles of General Secretary of the Federated Miscellaneous Workers’ Union and President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions.

Mr Ferguson frequently travelled to Korea in both his capacity as Minister and Trade Union official. He brings a deep understanding of the Australia-Korea relationship, having actively engaged with Korean counterparts to promote mutual interests and strengthen bilateral relations.

Australian exports to Korea were valued at $53.9 billion in 2022, representing Australia’s third largest export market and 8.1 per cent of all Australia’s exports, with coal, natural gas, iron ore and beef ranking as the top exports. Our two-way goods and services trade is also significant and was worth over $81 billion in 2022, placing Korea as Australia’s fourth largest two-way trading partner.

Mr Ferguson currently holds a number of leadership positions in business. Martin is a member of an Advisory Board to the Australian Oil and Gas industry association, AEP and is the Strategic Director of Natural Resources to SGH Energy.  He also chairs the CO2CRC, is a consultant to the Board of Accommodation Australia and the Minerals Council. He served until recently as the Chair of Clare Valley Wine and Grape Association and was an Independent Director of the Stars Foundation.

Mr. Ferguson commented on his appointment “It is a privilege to accept the position of Chairman of the AKBC. I look forward to continuing the legacy of Simon Crean, whose foundational work and respect within the council have set a high benchmark. I am eager to contribute to and strengthen the dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship between Australia and Korea.”

AKBC Executive Director Liz Griffin said she was delighted to welcome Mr Ferguson to the role.

“Martin’s exceptional career in government and industry, and his comprehensive understanding of Australia-Korea economic relations, position him uniquely to enhance and deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations. We are excited for his leadership as we approach an unprecedented level of interest in the bilateral relationship.”

The AKBC wishes to recognise the ongoing legacy and significant contribution made by the former Chairman, the Hon Simon Crean.  Ms. Griffin paid tribute to Mr. Crean’s tenure:

“Simon had a deep passion and enthusiasm for the bilateral relationship, and under his leadership, the AKBC saw substantial progress and deepening of ties.”

Mr Ferguson will begin in his new role effective immediately.
