Rachel Charles

Rachel is a partner in EY’s Tax practice in Sydney.  Recognised for her energy and execution, Rachel has been appointed to a number of market facing leadership roles, including NSW Resources Tax leader (2011-2016), Oceania Mining & Metals Middle Market Leader (2015-2016) and Eastern Region Director for EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year Program (2016).

Over a 20 year career spent in EY’s Perth, Brisbane and Sydney offices, Rachel has worked with a wide range of Australian and multinational companies, assisting them to manage their Australian income tax obligations and inbound/outbound investment structures.

Rachel is focussed on the mining and energy sectors and has enjoyed the challenges and opportunities that working with companies in these industries has brought.  These have included adapting the delivery of services to meet her clients’ changing needs, across the commodities cycle and across cultures.

As a tax advisor to the resources sector, Rachel has worked extensively with Korean, Japanese and Chinese clients.  She has responsibility as a counsellor for bilingual team members and has worked as the Sydney tax sponsoring partner for the EY Inbound business development teams.  Rachel has presented to EY’s Asia Professional Network on best practice for working with Asian clients.

Rachel’s committee memberships have included the Institute of Chartered Accountant’s sub-committee to the Australian Taxation Office’s resource tax working group (2011-2015), the NSW Women in Mining network (WIMnet) (2013-2015) and EY Sydney’s Network of Winning Women (NOWW) (2013-2016).

Rachel holds Bachelors of Laws and Commerce from the University of Western Australia and is a Chartered Accountant, Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and a member of the Tax Institute of Australia.

Rachel is married to Tony and has a son and a daughter.  The family enjoy a range of water sports.
